File Extension XLSFix, Open, Edit and View .XLS File ExtensionsAuthor: Microsoft Corporation To view XLS files, you must have a compatible program such as MS Excel, Lotus 123, or OpenOffice.org Calc. In addition, Microsoft offers a free Excel viewer on their Microsoft Office website. Another common problem with XLS files is that they can become corrupt. When these files are corrupt, they generally will not open. This can be particularly devastating due to the nature of Excel spreadsheets. For example, a single spreadsheet can contain entire databases. The sheer volume of data within a single spreadsheet can be vast, making file corruption disastrous. XLS files can contain dangerous macros and they can contain computer viruses so it is extremely important to use care when opening this file type, especially if unsolicited. XLS files may lose their file association too. When clicking on an XLS file with no file association, your computer doesn’t recognize the file extension XLS nor does it know what to do with it. If Excel, the Excel Viewer, Calc, or another compatible application is listed, go ahead and select it. Otherwise, browse your computer for the appropriate application. Finally, choose place a check mark in the box that says, “Always use the selected program for this file type.” With the 2007 edition of Microsoft Excel, the file extension XLS has been replaced with a new default, XLSX, but it’s still possible to save your files with file extension XLS if you prefer.
